Induction day at SEDA College: are you ready for it?

Usually, everyone’s first day at school is quite scary for many distinct reasons: new people, new atmosphere, new rules. Now imagine the first day at school in a different country, with people who speak different languages, and where you basically know nobody. It sounds awkward, doesn’t it? However, this is the real-case scenario for students from many different countries every Friday at SEDA College’s induction day. The main difference is that at SEDA, we break through with what causes insecurities to our students by simply providing them with what they need: necessary and accessible information. So are you ready for SEDA College’s induction day? Then come with us.

FIRST PART:

This is the most formal part of the presentation. It’s actually when the Social Activities Coordinator goes through the visa application check-list together with the students. It’s time to talk about all the necessary documentation that they will need to have when their appointment day at immigration comes up. That’s why we hand out some pamphlets in order to make it easier for everyone to understand the presentation.

It’s also when we talk about the rules and regulations of the school. The Assistant Director of Studies (ADOS) takes place and talks about things such as the importance of having a good attendance rate, holidays request, the books we use, how our classes are structured, among other things.

the Exams Officer finishes the first part talking about the importance of doing an external exam. It’s always very important to point out that it’s mandatory from immigration that the students apply for at least one external exam.

Right after the presentation, the students are given some charts to sign and it’s also when they do their speaking test. The Assistant Director of Studies (ADOS) and the Exams Officer are responsible for assessing the students. Some of them actually get very nervous when doing their speaking test, however, we try to make them feel comfortable and confident in order to place them on the right level. For this reason, there’s also a placement test which is done online by the students before they come, and we match the results of their placement test with the results of their speaking test. This is how we place students at a specific level.

WALKING TOUR:

The walking tour is officially the students’ first activity with the school, and it starts after the formal presentations and assessment tests. It’s time to relax! It’s when students interact and get to know each other. It’s a time to speak English and also to visit some places in the city that they will stay in for a while.
