In May 2024, following devastating floods in southern Brazil, Jorge Santos, a businessman and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt, decided to dedicate his time to volunteering. With experience in the construction industry, Jorge saw an opportunity to help families who had lost their homes in the chaos. However, this mission was not just a personal journey; it was made possible through the support of his partners, including SEDA College and his academy, JSBJJ.
Support from SEDA College
Jorge Santos is a valued partner of SEDA College, and their partnership was crucial in enabling his volunteer work in Brazil. SEDA, known for its commitment to education and student well-being, organised a fundraising campaign in Ireland with students and friends to raise the necessary funds for the project. The collaboration between SEDA College and JSBJJ was a global effort, involving both the student community and a shared passion for sport to make a meaningful impact in Brazil.
Preparing for the Mission
Before heading to Brazil, Jorge visited his business branches in Sweden, Hungary, Mexico, and Ireland, fulfilling his professional responsibilities. Once completed, he flew to Porto Alegre, where he reunited with his son Matheus.
Upon arrival, Jorge met Carlos, one of the flood victims, who had suffered a stroke and faced physical limitations preventing him from carrying out manual labour. Determined to help, Jorge and his team worked for 30 days rebuilding Carlos’ home while balancing his physical training and Jiu-Jitsu sessions.
Achievements in Sport and Life
Despite an intense volunteering schedule, Jorge found time to compete in the Copa Prime, a Jiu-Jitsu championship he had always wanted to participate in. With dedication and skill, he became the champion, further cementing his reputation both in the ring and in community service.
Jorge also prepared to defend his title at Grapple Kings 13, one of the most significant events in his career, where he successfully claimed his third championship belt.
Expanding Social Projects
In the final 15 days of his stay in Brazil, Jorge focused on expanding his social projects. He opened two new JSBJJ branches in the greater Porto Alegre area and visited additional projects in Santa Catarina and Pará, sharing his testimony and forming new partnerships.
Thanks to SEDA’s support and the successful fundraising efforts, Jorge was able to visit social projects such as the one in Salinópolis, where he was inspired by how much Professor Júnior Guimarães achieved with limited resources. This experience reaffirmed the power of sport in transforming lives in underprivileged communities.
Return to Ireland and New Challenges
After completing his mission in Brazil, Jorge and Matheus returned to Dublin, where they had scheduled fights. Jorge, needing to lose weight quickly for the Grapple Kings 13 tournament, achieved his goal and delivered a flawless performance, securing his third championship belt.
A week later, Jorge took part in ADCC Ireland, an event that held special significance for him as he had competed in its first edition in 2013. Alongside 43 students from JSBJJ, Jorge aimed for the championship belt and trophies. After intense matches, he emerged as the absolute professional master champion, bringing home both trophies and the coveted belt.
Preparing for the Future
Now, Jorge is on his way to Dubai with his wife, Cíntia, to prepare for the World Pro in Abu Dhabi, one of the most important competitions of his career. His 60 days away from home, filled with challenges, triumphs, and dedication to helping others, demonstrate how the combination of sport, community service, and education can make a real difference.
The support from SEDA College, their students, and collaborators was vital in making this mission in Brazil possible. Alongside JSBJJ, SEDA helped promote a noble cause, proving that solidarity can cross borders and change lives.
