Today, we’re delighted to introduce Amir Zarbakhsh, our Assistant Director of Studies (ADOS) at the Dublin Campus. Amir’s journey to SEDA is as fascinating as it is inspiring, so let’s get to know him a little better!
From Iran to Ireland
Amir hails from Iran, a country known for its rich history and culture. In 2022, he packed his bags and moved to Dublin to pursue a master’s degree in Applied Linguistics at Trinity College Dublin. Teaching has always been a part of his life—he taught English in Iran and Malaysia before joining SEDA. As his studies in Ireland neared completion, Amir was hired by SEDA, marking the start of his career in education in this vibrant country.
Amir’s passion for teaching began back in 2018 during his undergraduate days when he started teaching part-time. This passion eventually led him to take on more responsibilities and grow into his current role as ADOS. “Education has always been close to my heart,” Amir shares. “I wanted to make a greater impact, and SEDA gave me that opportunity.”
A Day in the Life of an ADOS
Life as an ADOS is anything but dull. Amir wears many hats, from managing examination affairs for students (like Trinity College ISE, IELTS, and Cambridge exams) to liaising with external institutions. He also supports students with academic concerns, including class changes and holiday requests, and coordinates the weekly teacher timetables.
“It’s a busy role,” Amir admits, “but incredibly rewarding. No two days are the same, and I love that.”
For Amir, the most fulfilling part of his job is helping students, particularly in moments of crisis. “It’s not just about improving their educational experience,” he explains. “It’s also about supporting them in other aspects of life if I can. Seeing them overcome challenges and thrive is truly rewarding.”
Falling in Love with Ireland
When asked about his favourite things in Ireland, Amir’s face lights up. “The people here are so warm and welcoming—it’s been a fantastic experience,” he says. “And don’t even get me started on the stunning nature! Ireland’s landscapes are like nothing I’ve ever seen.”
Amir encourages all students to immerse themselves in Irish traditions. “You must experience St. Patrick’s Day at least once. But my personal favourite? Christmas! The lights, the food, the cosy atmosphere—it’s magical.”
Life Lessons from Ireland
Living in Ireland and working at SEDA have profoundly shaped Amir’s outlook on life. “The work-life balance here is amazing, and I’ve grown so much as a person. My perspective on life is more positive than ever.”
For students navigating life in Ireland, Amir offers simple but powerful advice: “Keep working hard and stay positive, even when things get tough. Ireland is full of opportunities. You might stumble along the way, but with perseverance, success will come.”
And for those considering a move to Ireland? “It’s been the best decision of my life,” Amir says. “The opportunities, the people, the beauty—it’s all here waiting for you.”
Fun Facts About Amir
Did you know Amir lived in Malaysia for nearly a decade? Or that he served in the army for two years? When he’s not busy at SEDA, you might find him playing chess semi-professionally. And yes, students are often surprised to learn he’s from Iran—a testament to his diverse life experiences!
