So you’ve made the decision — you’re moving to Ireland. The flights are booked, your place at SEDA College is confirmed, and now comes that one question that stops everyone in their tracks: what on earth do I pack?

Clothing: Think Layers, Not Volume
Ireland’s weather is famously unpredictable. You can have sunshine, wind, and rain all before lunchtime. The trick isn’t packing more — it’s packing smart.
A good waterproof jacket is non-negotiable. Think in layers: a base, a mid-layer fleece, and a windproof outer shell. Bring 5 to 7 outfits at most — you’ll be doing laundry regularly, and the shops in Dublin and Cork are excellent. Waterproof boots or sturdy trainers will serve you far better than anything open-toed.
Documents: Don’t Cut Corners Here
This section deserves your full attention. Make sure you have your valid passport (with at least six months beyond your stay), your school acceptance letter, proof of financial means, vaccination records, active travel insurance, and any parental consent letters if applicable.
Scan everything and save it to cloud storage. It takes ten minutes and could save your entire trip.
The Small Things That Make a Big Difference
A universal travel adapter is essential — Irish plugs have three rectangular pins, different from most of the world. Without one, your devices are useless from day one.
Pack a small medical kit with pain relief, plasters, and any prescription medication with an English-language doctor’s note. Cold and flu tablets are a wise addition given the climate.
What to Leave Behind
Hair straighteners or dryers that aren’t dual voltage will burn out. Don’t overload your case with toiletries — the basics are widely available and affordable in Ireland. And avoid packing large amounts of processed food, as customs may confiscate it.
One Golden Rule
Leave space in your bag for the return journey. Everyone comes back with more than they arrived with — new clothes, gifts, books, memories. Plan for that now and you’ll thank yourself later.
