15 Years of SEDA: Transforming Lives Through Education and Inclusion

At SEDA College, we are celebrating a milestone that fills us with immense pride—15 years of empowering students from all walks of life. As an English language school based in Ireland, our mission has always been to provide high-quality education while embracing diversity and fostering a sense of community. This commitment shines through in every aspect of our work, particularly in our Ukrainian Refugee (Adult) English Language Programme, which has touched the lives of hundreds of students, including those with disabilities.

A Commitment to Empowering Refugees

In March 2022, when the world was facing unprecedented challenges, SEDA College took a bold step to support Ukrainian refugees who had fled their homeland. We opened our doors to the first group of Ukrainian students, offering them full scholarships to learn English in our evening classes. These scholarships were more than just a ticket to language proficiency; they were a lifeline for those seeking to integrate into Irish society, find employment, and rebuild their lives.

By the end of 2024, our programme had grown beyond Ukrainian refugees to include individuals from countries like Somalia, Algeria, and Sudan. We had awarded 280 full scholarships, with the number expected to reach 310 by the close of 2024. Over 400 people have started their educational journey with us through these scholarships, with an impressive 60% of students completing the course in 2023. This success is a testament to the resilience of our students and the unwavering support they receive from our dedicated staff.

One of our students shared their experience, saying, “At first, it was difficult to deal with the difference in language, but I realized that I could learn English and also make friends here. I love the teachers at SEDA!”

Supporting Students with Disabilities

Inclusivity is not just a buzzword at SEDA College—it’s a core value that we live by every day. We understand that learning needs can vary greatly, and we have made significant efforts to accommodate students with disabilities. For example, we have introduced specialized classes for visually impaired students and offered courses with a focus on writing skills for those unfamiliar with the Latin alphabet. These tailored programmes ensure that every student, regardless of their challenges, has the opportunity to succeed.

One of our students beautifully captured the essence of this support: “Ireland is now my home, and I’ve made new friends. I feel supported here.”

A Community Built on Connection and Growth

Our evening classes are more than just a place to learn English; they are a hub for cultural exchange and personal growth. Running from Monday to Thursday, these classes provide a structured yet intimate environment where students can connect with peers from diverse backgrounds. With a maximum of 15 students per class, everyone receives the attention they need to thrive.

Through our full immersion programme, students progress from Beginner (A0) to Intermediate (B2) levels, using the renowned English File 4th edition book. This comprehensive approach not only enhances their language skills but also helps them build confidence and form lasting friendships.

One student’s testimonial highlights the impact of this community: “I am very happy that I got a job in Ireland, and I have been improving my English through the classes. Thank you, SEDA College.”

Looking Forward: Expanding Our Impact

As we celebrate 15 years of SEDA College, we are filled with a sense of accomplishment and a renewed commitment to our mission. We aim to reach even more students in the coming years, opening new classes and continuing to provide a welcoming and supportive environment for everyone who walks through our doors.

We are particularly focused on expanding our support for students with disabilities and ensuring that our educational programmes remain accessible to all. Our hope is that every student who joins us will leave with not just improved English skills but also a sense of belonging and empowerment.

This journey would not have been possible without the incredible support of our students, staff, and partners. As we look back on the past 15 years, we are deeply grateful to everyone who has been a part of SEDA College. Together, we have created a place where education transforms lives, and for that, we thank you.

As we move forward, we are excited to continue this journey of growth, inclusion, and community. Here’s to 15 years of making a difference—and to many more years of changing lives through education.
