The exchange is a unique moment, which brings many new things, activities and various commitments for a student. Due to anxiety and lack of a routine in the first few weeks, healthy habits can be forgotten or overlooked.

From this lack of commitment to health, many health problems can be triggered, causing you some trouble during your experience abroad. So check out our tips on how to maintain healthy habits during your exchange!

1. HAVE A ROUTINE

Just like at home, it’s very important to set up an agenda during the interchange, to arrange appointments, so that you can have your meals at the right time, sleep well, walk or go on jogs, dance or do yoga. Having a routine helps you to be healthy.

2. BRING FOOD FROM HOME

Although there are some good options of healthy restaurants, preparing our own food gives us the opportunity to consume what we like and things that really do us good. We are sure to use a suitable oil, mild seasonings and fresh food.

3. PRACTICE PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

When traveling from a place to another or when getting to know the city, take some time to walk or cycle. Spontaneous activities help to complement daily exercise. Go to public spaces and take walks in parks, for example.

For those who like gym, Dublin has several options, the best known are Ben Dunne, Flye Fit and West Wood.

4. GO FOR HEALTHY OPTIONS

If you need to eat something when you are not at home, look for lighter alternatives to quench hunger. Choose a salad, lean meats, soups and whole-grain breads. Setting aside good choices can cause you problems in the future.

5. ALWAYS HAVE A SNACK

If you’re going to be away from home all day, pack some natural sandwiches, chopped fruits, raisins and yogurts in your bag or backpack, for example. It’s always good to be prepared in case there is no balanced diet along the way. And so you also don’t need to spend a lot with eating out.

6. READ ALL THE MEAL PLANS

When choosing to eat out, pay attention to all the options offered in the establishment. Most places always have some lighter plates or allow an adaptation, dispensing or changing some ingredients.

7. DON’T SPOIL YOUR EXPERIENCE BECAUSE OF YOUR DIET

Eat and drink whatever you like, try new dishes, different flavors and seasonings. After all, you are in another country and have access to different things. But what is recommended is just not to eat greasy things and overeating at meals. Find your balance and enjoy!

8. ALWAYS HAVE A BOTTLE OF WATER AROUND

Drink water. Water awakens the body at the beginning of the day, leaves the skin more beautiful and it’s essential to keep our body working properly. In winter, especially, we may not feel thirsty, but it’s important to have a little bottle of water with you.

The secret of a successful exchange is always to strive for balance. You can take advantage of everything and still keep healthy habits.
