Hurling the Ancient Game of Ireland

SEDA Student Day out Sunday July 2nd 2017

Hurling which is probably the fastest field sport in the world and possibly its oldest is a big part of Irish culture, history and folklore. Its origins stretch back nearly 2000 years and it survives to this day as an exciting exhibition of skill, bravery and athleticism.

The game is played with sticks called Hurley, a small ball known as a sliother, and by 2 teams of 15 who play on a large pitch with goals at two ends.

July 2nd is the Leinster Final one of the biggest games of the year with the winners well on the way to the All-Ireland final in September. This year Wexford will be competing in the final hoping to take a step towards winning their first All-Ireland since 1996.

Wexford sometimes called the WEXICANS! At least in part because of the tradition of some of their large and colourful supporters to wear Mexican Hats. Somewhat surprisingly and of interest to our Asian Students the Wexicans will be led into battle by a man of Chinese heritage Lee Chin. Lee one of Ireland’s best Hurlers and Gaelic Footballers combines supreme skill with great strength and athleticism.

SEDA are arranging a day out which will include a tour led by Principal Paul Brown who will bring” Willy the Mascot” who has not been in Croke Park since 1996 and will be raffled at half time among the SEDA students attending. Dress up in the famous Wexican colours of Purple and Gold and join us at the GPO on Sunday July 2nd and enjoy the craic.
