You watched the shows, took the courses, aced the tests. And then, on your very first day in Ireland, someone asked you “How’s she cuttin’?” — and your mind went completely blank. Welcome to real Irish English.

Classrooms prepare you to communicate. But the streets, the pubs, the supermarkets and the workplaces have a language all their own. And that language? You only pick it up by living it. The good news: it’s genuinely fun, and once it clicks, it sticks.

The expressions you’ll hear every single day

“Grand” might be the most Irish word in existence. It means fine, okay, don’t worry about it — depending on context. “Are you okay?” “Ah, I’m grand.” Simple as that. Use it freely.

“Craic” (pronounced “crack”) is another essential. It means fun, good vibes, great atmosphere. “What’s the craic?” is basically “what’s going on?” or “what’s the story?”. If someone tells you the night was “great craic”, it was a brilliant evening.

“Savage” has nothing aggressive about it in Ireland. It means fantastic, brilliant, really good. “That pizza was savage.” It’ll sound odd at first, but you’ll be saying it yourself within weeks.

“Jacks” is the bathroom. That’s just what they call it. Forget “Where’s the restroom?” — get comfortable with “Where are the jacks?”

“Gas”, used as an adjective, means funny or hilarious. “He’s gas, isn’t he?” Nothing to do with fuel. Everything to do with laughter.

The mistakes every foreigner makes at first

One of the classics: Irish people say “I will, yeah” to agree with something — but the tone can sound sarcastic to an outsider. It’s not. It’s genuine agreement. Now, “I will, yeah… right” — that’s when you might want to double-check.

Another one: “Are you alright?” in Ireland isn’t always a deep emotional check-in. Often it’s just a casual greeting, the equivalent of “hey”. A smile and a “Grand, thanks!” is all you need.

And if someone calls you an “eejit” with a grin on their face, don’t be offended. It’s a very common, affectionate way of calling someone a bit silly. Think of it as teasing from someone who likes you.

Why learning this vocabulary changes everything

Once you start understanding and using these expressions, something shifts. Conversations flow more naturally, people warm up to you faster, and you start to feel like you actually belong — not just passing through. That’s the difference between being a tourist and being a resident.

If you’re thinking about making the move, it’s worth understanding which variety of English is actually worth learning before you book your flight. And if you’re still in the planning stage, finding out what a Gap Year is and why Ireland tops the list might be exactly the push you need.

The English you learn in real life is the English that stays with you. And there’s no better place to learn it than right in the middle of the culture that created it.

Ready to take the next step?
