Classrooms prepare you to communicate. But the streets, the pubs, the supermarkets and the workplaces have a language all their own. And that language? You only pick it up by living it. The good news: it’s genuinely fun, and once it clicks, it sticks.<\/p>\n

The expressions you’ll hear every single day<\/h2>\n

“Grand”<\/strong> might be the most Irish word in existence. It means fine, okay, don’t worry about it \u2014 depending on context. “Are you okay?” “Ah, I’m grand.”<\/em> Simple as that. Use it freely.<\/p>\n

“Craic”<\/strong> (pronounced “crack”) is another essential. It means fun, good vibes, great atmosphere. “What’s the craic?”<\/em> is basically “what’s going on?” or “what’s the story?”. If someone tells you the night was “great craic”<\/em>, it was a brilliant evening.<\/p>\n

“Jacks”<\/strong> is the bathroom. That’s just what they call it. Forget “Where’s the restroom?”<\/em> \u2014 get comfortable with “Where are the jacks?”<\/em><\/p>\n

“Gas”<\/strong>, used as an adjective, means funny or hilarious. “He’s gas, isn’t he?”<\/em> Nothing to do with fuel. Everything to do with laughter.<\/p>\n

The mistakes every foreigner makes at first<\/h2>\n

One of the classics: Irish people say “I will, yeah”<\/em> to agree with something \u2014 but the tone can sound sarcastic to an outsider. It’s not. It’s genuine agreement. Now, “I will, yeah… right”<\/em> \u2014 that’s when you might want to double-check.<\/p>\n

Another one: “Are you alright?”<\/em> in Ireland isn’t always a deep emotional check-in. Often it’s just a casual greeting, the equivalent of “hey”. A smile and a “Grand, thanks!”<\/em> is all you need.<\/p>\n

And if someone calls you an “eejit”<\/strong> with a grin on their face, don’t be offended. It’s a very common, affectionate way of calling someone a bit silly. Think of it as teasing from someone who likes you.<\/p>\n
