Winter in Ireland is one of the major concerns for those who are coming to study in Dublin, especially when it comes to what people should carry in their suitcases in order to deal with the cold temperatures. So the question always arises: is it worth bringing winter clothes to the exchange program in Ireland?
If you already have one or two heavier winter jackets at home, we highly recommend you to bring them to Dublin, because they will help you on your arrival and in the first days. The other items you already have at home, such as lighter jackets and pants, you can also bring them.
But the important thing is: don’t go shopping before your exchange unless it is extremely necessary. Try to take what you already have in your wardrobe, okay?
To sum up, the point is that you shouldn’t pack your suit with winter clothes from your home country. Why? Here are three reasons:
1. THE PIECES OF CLOTHING WON’T FIT INTO THE LUGGAGE
The weather in Dublin has plenty of wind and rain (which is more of a drizzle). So for the day to day, not all coats and jackets are enough. When you arrive in Ireland you will realize that a good waterproof jacket or thermal underwear makes all the difference in your routine.

2. IT’S CHEAPER!
Yes, that’s right. Winter clothing in Dublin is cheaper than most of the students’ home countries. You can find nice jackets for 30 euros, for example. And if you arrive in the period of seasons changing, the price improves even more because of the promotions.
Penneys, for example, is one of the most famous shops in Ireland – elsewhere in the world is known as Primark – and is the students’ paradise. There you find everything, including accessories for everyday life, such as gloves, scarves, caps… And all this you find between 1.50 to 10 euro.
3. YOU CAN RELEASE SOME SPACE IN YOUR SUITCASE
Jackets usually take up enough space in the suitcase, don’t they? So taking just what you already have at home helps you to free up a place for other things.
We hope that this post can help you out with all of your questions.
