Things that only who travelled with Ryanair will understand

The low-cost way of flying was invented by the Americans in 1967 with Southwest Airlines. Ryanair takes customers to every continent, but its users opinions about the low-cost airline have always been divided.

There are many airlines in Europe which work with this method, but, without doubt, Ryanair is the most well-known one. The company is Irish, although their main headquarters are located in Stansted, London. Ryanair is always in the news because of the “peculiar” attitudes of its marketing staff and their eccentric owner, Michael O’Leary.

Among the bizarre things done or disclosed by the company it’s worth remembering how far the customer actually has to travel on foot in order to keep some extra cash in their pockets, charging customers for the use of the toilet and the constant problems that they cause with their rivals – The Portuguese company TAP has suffered from the sarcasm by Ryanair.

Well, let’s go! If you have never travelled with Ryanair, I will explain some of the curiosities around this company and the huge space it has in our hearts.

THE TICKET CAN COST LESS THAN A SANDWICH

Yes, this is true. Frequently Ryanair offers some unbelievable promotions, like flights for only 2 euros!

The airline doesn’t offer even a glass of water during the flights, so obviously it’s not a good idea to buy anything while you’re flying, considering supply and demand. It sounds weird to tell people that you paid 2 euros for the ticket and 6 for a sandwich, right?

DON’T EXPECT COMFORT

Don’t expect to pay 9 euros for a flight ticket and travel in the most comfortable airplane ever, ok? Brazilians have an expression to describe Ryanair’s airplanes and it means basically that they are old cars with wings.

The seats can’t be reclined and the sensation is similar to this one:

Despite the rumours, all the planes I flew on were well-kept but still uncomfortable.

NOTHING IS FOR FREE

Be careful when the flight attendants ask if you would like something because even if your answer is “a glass of water” you will have to pay for it.

THEY TEACH US THERE’S NO NEED TO BRING A LOT OF CLOTHES WHEN WE’RE TRAVELLING

A suitcase and that’s all. It can be a suitcase, backpack or even a shopping bag, but it is only one! If you really want to reduce costs you won’t want to bring any bag with you.

EUROPE IS JUST RIGHT THERE

Considering the point of view for those who live here in Ireland, even though there’s no much comfort, we can’t deny that Ryanair and its good prices encourage us to travel and expand our horizons. It’s so good, easy and fast that in the end, the distance is a minor concern.

To get an idea, you can fly from Lisbon to Dublin, Faro, Frankfurt, London, Manchester, Marseille, Paris, Pisa, Porto, Krakow, Liverpool, Greece…Literally, the sky’s the limit.

THE FLIGHT WILL BE CROWDED

Don’t think you’re the only one who chooses  Ryanair in order to save money. All the flights I have got with them were with, at least, 80% of the seats occupied, so there will be a queue to get on the plane, to find a place to put your suitcase, to leave the plane and during the immigration border. Keep it in mind and relax, don’t get nervous or impatient, it won’t help you.

TIP: If you ever get lost in the airport and can’t find the Ryanair check-in, just go to the busiest one.
