In order to bring English to all audiences, SEDA College Online has launched a free English course in Sign Language, aimed at the beginning language audience.

For this important online course, our teaching platform was supported by Ophicina de Inovação, which developed the platform www.opensenses.com.br exclusively for this audience in Virtual Learning Environment, AVA in Portuguese. The tool automatically synchronizes class videos, content translated into the Brazilian Sign Language (Libras), and the subtitles.

The Beginners course in Libras lasts seven hours and consists of four modules, aimed at students with a very low level of proficiency in the language. The course will assist in locations, airport guidelines, internet languages, and other contexts where English is required.

Recently, SEDA College hosted a talk with Eddie Redmond, CEO of the Irish Deaf Society, which addressed the importance of sign language, cultural aspects and the recent achievements of the deaf community in Ireland, such as having the sign language recognized by the government. This event endorsed the motivation to launch the project, which was already under development.

“Enabling the hearing impaired to access the first steps in learning English means breaking down barriers, arousing new interests and building a bridge that will connect you with other languages, broadening your knowledge of the world,” says SEDA Group CEO Tiago Mascarenhas. The executive says the idea is to follow the profile of users of Libras to raise their needs and, from there, develop new content.

It is important to point out that this program allows only the practice of English through reading and writing. For dialogue or communication, American Sign Language (ASL) learning is required.
